Newsletter - July, 2007

Dear All,

Hope you are having a wonderful summer! The former staff of Midwives Care have been busy adjusting to new jobs and finding our focus for Birth & Beyond. It's so different being involved with birth when you are not actually physically assisting birthing women who you know and love from within your own practice. Packing up charts brought back many memories and of course made the packing take all that much longer! We hope to see many of you again at our annual picnic so please put the following information on your calendars!

Birth & Beyond Annual Picnic
Mt. Airy Forest: Stonesteps Pavilion
Saturday, Sept 8, 2007
4pm - 8 pm

We will provide grillables and non-alcoholic beverages. If you can, please bring a dish to share.

Jackie continues to see women twice a month at the office on Hamilton Ave. for their annual PAP smears and other gynecologic needs. These visits are on a cash basis although your labs can be billed directly to your insurance company. The visit can be submitted to your insurance company towards your deductible. A few women come in for prenatal care until they get established elsewhere for further prenatal and birth care. The new office phone number is 541-5999.

Leah and Stephanie both work part time with the Greater Cincinnati Nurse-Midwifery Associates at the University Hospital (584-1130). They each hold a clinic one Friday morning a month specifically for women who want to see them. However, it is not the place for self-pay women! Check your insurance to make sure the midwives are covered before you come. Stephanie's baby, Abby, has turned 9 months old and looks just like her!

Birth & Beyond is focusing on four main committees (chairs are noted):
  • Website - Leah Terhune with Rich Goldman as webmaster
  • Community Relations - Jackie Gruer
  • Healthcare Policy - Gretchen Finniff
  • Education - Heather Schwantes and Wendy Dorn

We will be posting mission statements and meeting times for each committee. If you are interested in getting involved please let us know!

Several board members recently went to see Michael Moore's Sicko. It is a strong indictment of our 'health care' system. Moore spent more time being concerned instead of obnoxious and his facts seemed well thought out and presented. If you get a chance, it's worth seeing.

In Health,
Jackie and Leah
