Newsletter - November, 2007

We had a wonderful time at the picnic in September, good friends, good food, and lots of interesting talk. The kids had a great time….in spite of the dryness of the season we had water and it seems making a mud mountain was of special interest to the kids. Thanks to all who came and shared a meal and play time with us! And thank you from us and the Christian Appalachian Project for the bounty of toys that were donated!

Our committees are up and running with what we hope will be of interest to people who want options available to the families of Ohio. If you have some energy to invest we hope we can put you to good work…

  • Community Relations will meet this Wednesday, November 14 at the office at 4244 Hamilton Ave. in Northside at 7 pm. A special (and exciting!) project will be discussed.

  • Website meets monthly reviewing and adding to our website content as well as brainstorming ways to most effectively use the site to get information to women/families wanting choices (and to inspire women to want to know their options!)

  • Education is planning educational sessions around Cincinnati intended for women and their families. They will start with pregnancy and birth topics and are looking for volunteers who may be interested in teaching or otherwise being a part of these sessions.

  • Health Care Policy intends to monitor legislation and policy that impacts on pregnancy, birth and women's health care issues.

Also check out the committee mission statements on our website, http://www.birthnbeyond.org/about.html to see if there is something you are particularly interested in working on, and contact us at webmaster@birthnbeyond.org or by replying to this email.

There will be a special preview showing of The Business of Being Born (www.thebusinessofbeingborn.com) sponsored by the International Cesarean Awareness Network (ICAN) on November 17 at the Mariemont Theatre. This is a documentary movie produced by Ricki Lake due to be released early in 2008. The movie begins at 10:30am and will be followed by a panel discussion which should end by 1pm. Advance ticket sales are available by PayPal through http://greater-cincinnati.ican-online.org/BOBB.html. This is recommended though tickets will also be sold day of preview if seats are still available. The theatre will have their concessions open.

Home birth midwives in this state are facing problems and there are efforts to provide support for home birth options. The following is a statement submitted by the Ohio Friends of Midwives:

Fall Greetings from the Ohio Friends of Midwives. The Ohio Friends of Midwives (OFOM) is a non-profit, grassroots, consumer-based organization dedicated to promoting and supporting midwifery as a quality health care option for Ohio women and their families. OFOM serves as an educational resource for the public and for both professional and non-professional groups who share an interest in the Midwives Model of Care for pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. We strongly believe that out-of-hospital birth should be a safe, legal, and accessible option for all women and families in low risk pregnancies.

Please join OFOM in order to support your midwives and the availability of midwifery care in Ohio. You can join our Yahoo group and print a membership form by sending an email to: OFOMfamilies-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. Your membership will assist OFOM in its mission and it entitles you to receive our newsletters as well as join our mailing list and keep informed of important midwifery related concerns. Also, you can find out about our 2008 public education campaign, which will be kicked off soon, by joining the OFOMfamilies yahoo group.

Finally, OFOM would love to see those of you who want to support midwifery become a volunteer/supporter of OFOM. If you are interested in volunteering for OFOM, contact Linda Keller at Linda@ofom.org. We can use your skills and knowledge in support of midwifery. Thanks in advance for caring enough to get involved.

Keep your eyes open for the OFOM website which we hope to have back up and running soon!

Another group in support of homebirth and the Midwives Model of Care has also recently formed-- Ohio Families for Safe Birth. For more information, visit their website at www.safebirthohio.org.

In closing, we are wishing all women safe and satisfying birth experiences, safe and satisfying health care, and we are giving Thanks for our Blessings!
